I have been a fan of patchwork for such a long time. Back when I was a kid I think I hated it because I felt like patching pieces of fabric together seemed very thrifty and I didn’t want the kids at school to think that my mom was making my clothes. Funny how your perspective changes when you get older.
As an adult, I came to love patchwork after I read about the concept behind it when I discovered the cult favorite, Native Funk and Flash, a book featuring the art to wear scene of the Bay Area in the 1970′s. This book told a visual story about how patch-working first started as a way of putting energy into someone’s garment. Each patch that was stitched into a garment added a particular talisman energy within each piece which gave the wearer a certain extra “power” if you will. Just like a quilt is sewn together from memories and scraps and pieces from this family heirloom and that new piece of fabric, with each stitch and each piece of fabric, a whole lot of history, love and workmanship is involved.
Now as an adult, and as one that always mentions finding soul in products and places….how could you ask for more SOUL to be put into a garment than in a patch-worked garment?
Well, thank the heavens patch-working is back in full force on the denim scene and I AM LOVING IT!!!! Take a look at some great examples I pulled from my favorite trend resource, Stylesight.
