SANTA FE FOLK ART FESTIVAL PART 1: PARADE OF ARTISANS

I just got back from visiting Santa Fe for the Folk Art Festival that is held there every year.  I went with one of my designer clients, Emily Factor, and stayed at her artist mother’s amazing house in the hills outside of Santa Fe.  The weekend was amazing and filled with TONS of shopping, hiking in Pueblo caves, art and wonderful food.

Although we fit many other activities in while we were there, the Folk Art Festival was our top priority.  The festival is held every year and showcases artisans and their craft from all around the world.  I didn’t know what to expect, but I knew it was going to be good.  I was not disappointed.

It was so amazing to see all of these artists from around the world and the amazing products that they made.  If you haven’t seen by now on The Sche Report, I love color and embroidery and things inspired from other countries and time periods.  Most of the art we saw has been passed down for hundreds of thousands of years and is still crafted by hand in the original process as it was all those years ago.  I always find inspiration in fashion thru folk art and to see it all firsthand was beyond inspiring.

The night we arrived, we attended the opening parade of nations where the artisans paraded the streets of Santa Fe in their native dress proudly representing all of the countries that were there for the festival.  It was truly amazing to see all of these people from all over the world unite together in art.  We all got chills as the artisans carried their country’s sign and smiled from ear to ear as we all clapped and welcomed them to Santa Fe.

Me and two Nigerian artisans

All of the artisans paraded to a stage where they were welcomed by a huge crowd of locals.  Soon after the party started led by The African Showboyz from Ghana who were fantastic.

As you can see, the night was quite colorful and eclectic…just how I like it.  The mixture of prints, color and textures was nothing I have witnessed before and my mind was blown from the minute I arrived and only became more amazed as the weekend went on.  I’m looking forward to sharing all of my experience with you so stay tuned for more on the Festival including a close up on all of the product that was presented as well as other fun aspects of my trip.
