SPRING/SUMMER 2011 TOP 10 TRENDS: #5 TROUSERS

With the 70′s back in full force, it makes perfect sense that various forms of the Trouser were seen on the Spring runways.  From cropped styles to high-waisted culottes and more, there were plenty offerings to choose from.

long loose 1 SPRING/SUMMER 2011 TOP 10 TRENDS: #5 TROUSERS The Sche Report / Margaret Sche

Long and loose trousers from the Spring 2011 runways of Celine, Catherine Malandrino, Jil Sander, Yigal Azrouel, Issa, Max Azria, Maison Martin Margiela, Michael Van Der Ham and Dries Van Noten

LONG & LOOSE TROUSERS capture the ease of Spring in fluid fabrics like silks and jerseys.  The long flowy pants emerge with extra-wide legs and hip details.  Some styles are similar to a pajama pant with drawstrings and satin details.  Others are printed on silk fabrics and have tuxedo influences.  Dries Van Noten made the perfect version in several different fabrications which will be the most sought after of this kind of pant.  Next up is Celine’s silk scarf -like version with an exposed zipper and contrasting waistband.  This style of pant is easily replicated and can be made in cheaper fabrics such as jersey and cotton for the price conscious.

kulottes 1 SPRING/SUMMER 2011 TOP 10 TRENDS: #5 TROUSERS The Sche Report / Margaret Sche

Cropped trousers from the Spring 2011 runways of Mulberry, D & G, Rebecca Taylor, Alexander Wang, Stella McCartney, Tsumori Chisato, Roland Mouret and Dolce & Gabbana

CROPPED TROUSERS & CULOTTES made a huge appearance on the runways for Spring. Versions start right below the knee while longer styles are mid-calf.  Styles have a sense of ease about them made with elastic waists, straight and full-legs and lightweight fabrics.  Alexander Wang’s version has doodles on cotton fabric, while D & G offeres bold gingham options for a fun take on an old classic.

faye dunaway full leg trouser 1 1 SPRING/SUMMER 2011 TOP 10 TRENDS: #5 TROUSERS The Sche Report / Margaret Sche

Full leg trousers from the Spring 2011 runways of Marc Jacobs, Etro, Jason Wu, Derek Lam, Gareth Pugh, Adam, Alice + Olivia and Badgley Mischka

HIGH-WAISTED FULL LEG TROUSERS are back in full force for Spring 2011.  With all of the 70′s influences for Spring, this type of trouser will be the leader of the pack.  Worn super long with platforms, this classification is sexy and channels fashion icons from the 70′s with a nod to Studio 54 days.  Dressier fabrics such as silk are shown in saturated colors while linens are also popular for neutral tones.  This pant is a must-have and will continue to trend through the fall. Styles go from straight to slightly flared, I recommend finding the widest pair possible for the drama effect.  Pants are paired with sexy feminine blouses and lightweight sweaters for a feminine feel.

tapered carrot 1 SPRING/SUMMER 2011 TOP 10 TRENDS: #5 TROUSERS The Sche Report / Margaret Sche

Tapered carrot trousers from the Spring 2011 runways of Alexander Wang, Gucci, AF Vandervost, 3.1 Phillip Lim, Gaspard Yukievich, Matthew Williamson, Roland Mouret and Karen Walker

TAPERED CARROT TROUSERS are the evolution of the harem pant that had representation on the runways a few seasons back.  This style is full through the hips and slim at the ankle.  Many styles are pleated to add fullness through the thigh and to add to the shape.  This style is the youngest and will trend well in the Junior and Contemporary market.  Fabrications range from dressier chiffons at Phillip Lim to crinkled cotton at Alexander Wang.  There is a lot of diversity in this style of pant which allows for wearability from day to night making the carrot pant an important part of next year’s wardrobe.  Neutral colors would be key to purchase to allow for stylistic variations and to transition into Fall 2011.
